Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the entire length of an internal combustion engine to a great extent, by forming a power transmitting mechanism for driving auxiliary machinery at a base portion of crank arm on the side of journal.
CONSTITUTION: Crank shaft 1 is supported at its journal portions 1a by use of bearing metal 3. Here, gear 7 for driving various auxiliary machinery is formed integrally at a base portion of crank arm 1b on the side of journal 1a, and gear 8 to be in mesh with said gear 7 for driving, for instance, oil pump and gear 9 for driving water pump or distributor are incorporated in crank case 2. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to omit those portions at the front end of crank shaft 1 where sprockets, pulleys and others for driving auxiliary machinery have been disposed in the conventional arrangement, so that the entire length of internal combustion engine can be reduced correspondingly.
