Abstract

PURPOSE: To finish a stone to a desired surface accuracy, by detecting a thrusting force acting between the stone and a grindstone in terms of the displacement of an energization means to grind the stone under an appropriate thrusting force.
CONSTITUTION: A thrusting force acting between a stone 1 and a grindstone 14 is detected in terms of the deformation of a compressed spring 22 interposed between a housing 15 for a grindstone feed screw 19 and an operating wheel 21 for the feed screw 19. The deformation of the compressed spring is read through the displacement of a dial gauge 26. When the displacement of the gauge 26 reaches a value corresponding to a thrusting force necessary for grinding, the forward feed of the grindstone 14 by the wheel 21 is stopped and the stone 1 and the grindstone are moved relatively to each other on a plane perpendicularly intersecting the axis of the grindstone 14. The stone 1 is thus ground to a desired surface accuracy.
