Abstract

PURPOSE: The copolymerization of cyclopentadiene derivative and an unsaturated hydrocarbon is effected using a catalyst of compound of metal selected from W, Mo and Re, thus producing said resin with high unsaturation that is soluble in a solvent because it is gel-free.
CONSTITUTION: The copolymerization of (A) a cyclopentadiene derivative, preferably cyclopentadiene, and (B) an unsaturated hydrocarbon as isobutylene, butadiene, styrene, etc., is effected in the presence of a catalyst of at least one compound of metal selected from W, Mo and Re, preferably WCl6, WBr6 or MoCl5, wherein the molar ratio of A/B is 5W95/95W5, the amount of the catalyst used is 0.01W1 mol% based on the monomers and the monomer concentration in a solvent as toluene is 5W60wt%. The resulting resin has 150W240 bromine value and 500W10,000 number-average molecular weight and contains no gel.
