Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the ferromagnetic metal powder of high sensitivity which is suited for high-density recording media by reducing the metal compound powder composed primarily of iron with a reducing gas after heating and drying under vacuum, or interrupting reduction reaction and repeating pressure reduction-reduction then letting oxide films form with oxidative gas.
CONSTITUTION: The metal compound powder which is composed primarily of iron as represented by maghemite and magnetite is charged into a reduced pressure reaction furnace and is heated to dry under reduced pressure after which it is reduced by being contacted with reducing gas as represented by H2 and Co. It is also equanlly well to repeat blowing of the reducing gas with intervention of pressure- reduction operation by a number of times. These enable the sure releasing of residual moisture contents and the increase in reduction reaction efficiency to be achieved. After ending of the reduction reaction, the reaction furnace is brought to a reduced pressure and a small amount of oxidative gas is blown into the surface, by which the metal powder surfaces having been reduced are covered with oxide films so that the subsequent oxidation may be sufficiently suppressed.
