Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the steel ingot of superior material quality through unidirectional solidification by making the perpendicular temperature gradient of the molten steel in the mold larger than the horizontal direction temperature gradient in casting the steel ingot.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of bottom-pouring casting the molten steel, a mold bed plate 3 and a lower mold 4 are placed on a molding board 1 made of cast iron. On these are then placed two stages of upper molds consisting of molding flasks 5a lined with heat-insulating brickes 5b and exothermic feeding frame 6. An air feed pipe 11 and its support cylinder 9 made of steel or Al or packed with in-steel additives such as rare earth elements, Ca, Al, V, etc. are inserted into the mold. A cooler 7 is provided to the funnel-form nozzle 8 of the mold bed plate 3. The bottom- poured molten steel is heat-retained and slowly cooled by the feeding frame 6 and upper mold 5 in the upper part of the mold and is quenched by a cooler 7, lower mold 4, etc. in the lower part, thus the perpendicular temperature gradient in the mold is larger than the horizontal direction temperature gradient and the molten steel is unidirectionally solidified by stirring with the inert gas from the gas feed pipe 11, whereby the superior steel ingot is obtainable. The support cylinder 9 and pipe 11 are melted in the molten steel. This method may be utilized for top pouring method and continuous casting method as well.
