Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A novel imidazole compound of formula I and its pharmacologically permissible acid addition salt [R1,2 are H or lower alkyl; R3 is lower alkyl, phenyl, etc.; R4 is H, lower alkyl, etc.; R5 is H, -CF3, etc.; A is carbonyl or sulfonyl; the positions of R5 and -N(R4)-A-R3 groups on the phenyl nucleus are arbitrary.]. EXAMPLE:1-[4-(4-Chlorobenzoylamino)phenyl]-2-ethylimidazole. USE:A low-toxic antidepressant having non-specific anti-reserpic activity in contrast with conventional tri-cyclic antidepressants such as imipramine and amitriptyline. PROCESS:The objective compound I is prepared, e.g. by reacting a primary amino compound II with a carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, or their reactive derivative (R3A- OH), in an inert solvent such as chloroform, optionally in the presence of a de- acidifying agent such as potassium carbonate, at room temp. to 150 deg.C.
