Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible color display which does not cause white turbid state at all by applying orientation treatment to substrates in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecular orientation near the substrates is inclined with respect to the substrates and that the azimuth differences of the liquid crystal molecules near both substrates are made in the specific range.
CONSTITUTION: When an orientation treatment film 8 is formed on a substrate 1 having electrodes 2 by vacuum evaporating SiO from the direction 5 assuming angles of about 75W89° to substrate normal 4, the liquid crystal molecules 3 having chirality and exhibiting light absorptive dichromaticity orient by having a fixed pretilt θ0 with respect to the substrate 1. Further, the azimuth differences Δϕ of the liquid crystal molecules near both substrates are so set as to become within the range shown by formula [I] with respect to the liquid crystal layer thickness d and the intrinsic pitch P0 of the liquid crystal. The use of the conditions of the formula I enables white-turbidity-free conditions to be set with respect to arbitrary d/P0.
