Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce dispersion in coercive force by forming layer of cobalt-containing iron oxide layer on magnetic iron oxide powder in an alcohol solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Cobalt chloride and ferrous chloride are dissolved into a water soluble alcohol such as polyethylene glycol. Acicular iron oxide is dispersed into the solution, and dispersed solution is added with an aqueous solution containing an equivalent or more of alkali. The dispersion is then mixed at a temperature below its boiling point and filtered to separate out the magnetic powder. In this process, the cobalt chloride and ferrous chloride dissolved in the alcohol are precipitated out by the added alkali and deposited on the iron oxide magnetic powder as Co(OH)2 and Fe(OH)2. The precipitated Co(OH)2 and Fe(OH)2 on the powder is allowed to have a better balance and more uniform distribution by the use of alcohol solvent than use of water. Further, an excellent powder dispersion assures uniformly distributed magnetic powder. Thus, uniform reaction is caused to occur, providing magnetic powder having narrower coercive force distribution.
