Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure easy and speedy selection of shim thickness by measuring backlash of the ring gear against the drive pinion through pre-installation of dummy shim on the left and right sides and also by selecting a proper shim thickness on the basis of the compensation difference between the measured value of backlash and the thickness of dummy shim.
CONSTITUTION: A shim selector is composed of a pre-load-equipped mechanism 10, drive pinion rotating mechanism 30, ring gear rotating mechanism 50, backlash measuring mechanism 70, transfer level measuring mechanism 90 and calculation indicating mechanism 100. The drive pinion 2 and ring gear 3 are incorporated in the differential carrier 1 and taper roller bearings 5 are installed on the left and right sides through the differential case 4. The differential a'ssy in temporarily assembled condition with dummy shims SLD and SRD installed between carrier 1 and bearing 5 is set on the fixed jig. When the starting button is depressed, the device operates according to the specified sequence, causing appropriate thickness of the left and right shim to be indicated on the indicating mechanism 100.
