Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a variable dummy load by utilizing drain allowable loss of power FET to control voltage.
CONSTITUTION: A FET element Q1 in which the drain current IDS does not saturates against the drain-to-source voltage VDS is used so that the change in gate voltage VGS allows a desired characteristics to be selected to meet the requirements of the test device. Such FET has a high input impedance and needs a very small power for controlling the gate. This allows a simple control circuit GVC in which the varistor RV regulation can provide a continuously variable resistance from less than 1Ω to several ten kΩ. Furthermore, FET high speed switching performance can be utilized in practical applications ranging from direct current to about 5MHz.
