Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent oil leakage without any increase in allowance for fastening an oil seal and without sacrificing driving comfort, by forming a special layer on the surface of a piston rod of a damper and using an oil-swollen rubber oil seal. CONSTITUTION:A casing 10 of a damper 4 used for an automobile suspension, containing oil 9 in its lower portion, is equipped with a vertically movable piston rod 11 and an oil seal 12 at it upper portion. As the rod 11 moves vertically, oil adhering to it is scratched off by a lip 12a of the oil seal 12. In this case, a layer of Fe-C-N compound or chromium plating is formed through soft nitriding treatment on the surface of steel rod 11. A conventional oil seal made of rubber is dipped in oil to get the oil-swollen seal 12.
