Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable to measure the loss of optical fiber simple without cutting off the fiber, by obtaining the scattered waveform through the use of the pulse light source and obtaining the loss characteristics from it.
CONSTITUTION: The light from the pulse light source 1 having the pulse width tp enters the optical fiber 3 of test piece in the scattered light integrator 2. The scattered light of the fiber 3 is detected with the photo detector 4 and the waveform is obtained with the waveform analyzer 5. By measuring the scattered intensity at time t1 and t2, S(t1) and S(t2), the loss characteristics of the optical fiber can be obtained with equation 1. Further, the resolution is Δx=tpXC/n (where: C is light velocity in vacuum and n is the diffraction factor of the core of fiber) and it can be measured with good accuracy if the length L of the fiber 3 is sufficiently greater than Δx. Accordingly, the pulse width tp should be tp<L X n/C. Thus, the loss can simply be measured with good accuracy.
