Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polycarboxylic acid solution which does not contain a mineral acid substantially, by the removal of a mineral acid existing in a small amount in a polycarboxylic acid solution, using a packed bed of an OH-type weakly basic anion-exchange resin and repeating the passing of the solution through and the regeneration of the ion-exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: For example, citric acid separated from a fermented solution obtained by citric acid fermentation contains inevitably a small amount of sulfuric acid. A polycarboxylic acid solution containing such mineral acid is supplied to a packed bed of an OH-type weakly basic anion-exchange resin. Initial portion of eluate (containing substantially no polycarboxylic acid) is discharged out of the system, and the subsequent portion (containing the desired compound and less than permissible amount of the mineral acid) is collected. When mineral acid content of the eluate goes up to over the permissible level, supply of the solution is stopped and the packed bed is regenerated. Processes described above are repeated. The regeneration of the packed bed is carried out by supplying an alkaline solution to the packed bed after the collection of carboxylic acid solution eluted with water.
