Abstract

PURPOSE: To let plates undergo multi-layer arc welding at extremely narrow grooves without any defect by feeding electrode wires adjustably of their bending angles at the torch end and performing correction of welding aim positions in prompt response to the fluctuations in groove gap width in performing narrow-groove butt multi-layer arc welding of plates.
CONSTITUTION: Welding base metals 4, 4' are butted to a certain gap width and electrode wires 1, 1' are mutually insulated and passed through welding torches 3, 3'. The bending guide rod 8 of the electrode wires 1, 1' is alternately sandwiched and supplied to the weld zone, and arcs 6, 6' are generated. When the groove gap width is large, support rods 7, 7' are pulled to increase the curvature of the wires 1, 1' to widen the gap of the both arcs 6, 6' according to the groove gap width. When the groove gap width is narrow, the support rods 7, 7' are lowered to move the bending guide rod 8 of the wires 1, 1' so as to go away from the torch end, whereby the bending of the wires is reduced, the gap of the both arcs 6, 6' narrowed, the excessive melting of the groove side walls 5, 5' prevented and the sound weld zone free from any undercut formed.
