Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the selectivity, by adding an iodine or its compound to the reaction system of 1,1-dichloroethane and chlorine.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of 1,1-dichloroethane is reacted with chlorine, preferably in the liquid phase, in the presence of 10-5W10-2 mole of iodine or its compound to give 1,1,1-trichloroethane. The iodine compound preferably liberates iodine or incorporates chlorine in the molecule in the presence of chlorine, e.g. LiI, CaI2, BI3, or methyl iodide.
