Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare dihydroxydiphenylmethane useful as a raw material for the production of colorless and low-viscosity epoxy resins, easily, by heating colored molten dihydroxydiphenylmethane in the presence of oxalic acid. CONSTITUTION:Dihydroxydiphenylmethane colored with impurities, etc. is reacted with the anhydride or the dihydrate of oxalic acid preferably at 150-200 deg.C for 5- 30min. in an inert gas atmosphere to give decolorized dihydroxydiphenylmethane. The amount of oxalic acid is 0.05-5wt% on the basis of the dihydroxydiphenylmethane.
