Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve an efficiency of ignition by optical beams by a method wherein optical beams of high energy density are concentrated through a focusing unit on the wall of a combustion chamber and focused at a suitable position in the combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:An incident beam 12 of optical beams (laser) of high energy density is focused F around the center of space in a combustion chamber 3 where the flame spread distance is shortest and a high combustion efficiency is obtainable through a focusing lens 9 provided on a cylinder head 6 of the combustion chamber 3. The position most preferable for the focus F will be selected, which is flexible according to the structure of an engine. For example, a position near a combustion subchamber 3b or an exhaust valve 5 will be taken. For a focusing unit 7, not only a lens but also a prism can be employed. By arranging such, an efficiency of ignition with optical beams can be improved.
