Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible distortion-free displaying of images by providing a diffraction grating structure to one surface of an optical member.
CONSTITUTION: A plane diffraction grating structure 50 is applied on one surface 49 of a parallel plane glass plate 48 and luminous flux 51 is entered to part thereof. With this arrangement, the linearly diffracted light 52 having been diffracted in the direction satisfying total reflection conditions enters a total reflecting surface 53 and is thereby totally reflected to become luminous flux 54 which then enters the surface 49 again where it is diffracted by the diffraction grating structure 50 existing in said surface to luminous flux 55 which is then emitted to outside the glass plate 48. Hence, if the image information of the undulated distributions is contacted to the total reflecting surface 53, the exuding light being produced near the total reflecting surface 53 is absorbed by the convex part and the image information consisting of the undulated distributions is converted to the image information of the intensity distribution of brightness and since the optical path lengths of all totally reflecting rays become equal, the distortion-free images may be obtained.
