Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance, by di-t-butylating m-and p-mixed cresol with isobutylene gas in the presence of a combination catalyst of perchloric acid and phosphoric acid, and debutylating the di-t-butylated cresol obtained as bottom of fractional distillation.
CONSTITUTION: m- And p-mixed cresol is di-t-butylated with isobutylene gas using a combination catalyst of perchloric acid and phsophoric acid. Removing the catalyst by neutralization, 4, 6-di-t-butyl-3-methylphenol (A) is obtained as bottom liquid by fractional distillation, and m-cresol is obtained by the debutylation of (A). Amount of the catalyst is 0.1W1.0wt%, based on charged cresol, as 65W70% perchloric acid and 85% phosphoric acid, respectively. By using a catalyst of this combination, by-production of 2, 5-and 3, 5-di-t-butyl-substituted p-cresols having boiling points near that of (A) is suppressed, and the highly pure desired compound is obtained. The reaction temperature is below 60°C.
