Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polymethylene polyphenyl polycarbamate useful as a raw material of polymers, etc. in high selectivity and at a high reaction rate, by reacting an N-phenylcarbamate with formaldehyde in the presence of an aqueous acid solution in a specific concentration range.
CONSTITUTION: An N-phenylcarbamate I (R1 is 1W6C lower alkyl or cycloalkyl; R2 is H, halogen, 1W6C lower alkyl or alkoxy) is reacted with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-producing compound in the presence of an aqueous acid solution to give a polymethylene polyphenyl polycarbamate II (m ir 0 or 1W5). The acid concentration of the aqueous solution at the reaction initiation is adjused to ≥10wt%. Bis-(4-carbamatephenyl)-methane useful as an intermediate of polyurethane elastomers, etc. can be obtained in high selectivity.
