Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An interferon inducer obtained from beefsteak plants of the family Labiatae. White amorphous powder. Elementary analysis: C, 48.8W49%; H, 8.5W 8.7%; N, 6.3W6.5%; P, 1.0W1.1%. Molecular weight: about 100,000W 3,000,000. Solubility: soluble in water; slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, etc. Color reactions: positive to Minhydrin, phenol/sulfuric acid, and the Dittmer reactions; negative to the Elson-Morgan reaction. Chemical composition: 17 amino acids and 5 sugars.
USE: Interferon inducers, having antitumor activities and low toxicity, useful as antiviral agents.
PROCESS: Foliage and stem parts of beefsteak plants of the family Labiatae, e.g. Perilla frutescens purpura Makino or P. fructescens vividis Makino, are extracted with an aqueous alkali, and active constituents are collected from the filtrate by ultrafiltration, and purified to give the desired inducer.
