Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture steel material of constant quality at a high efficiency, by, in heat treatment of a variety of steel material in a continuous furnace or batch furnace, using N2 gas of a specific CO content and of adjusted dew point as an atmosphere gas. CONSTITUTION:In heat treatment of steel material, N2 gas contg. 3-15% by vol. CO, and having a dew point adjusted to -5--50 deg.C is used. Use of the gas having the above-described composition causes no decarburization or carburization on the surface during heat treatment, allowing heat treatment such as annealing, hardening, tempering, normalizing to take place at an excellent productivity. The heat- treating method is applied also to carbon steel, low alloy steel and high alloy steel such as bearing steel, tool steel etc.
