Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain liquid crystal composition for double-frequency dynamic method, having great dielectric anisotropy in low-frequency zone but small dielectric anisotropy in high-frequency zone, by the combined use of two kinds of liquid crystal compounds.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal composition contains liquid crystal compounds of formulas I and II (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are, respectively, a 1W10C straight-chain alkyl, alkoxy, or cyano group, and X, Y and Z are each H, chlorine, ethyl, methyl or cyano group). As compounds of the formula I, compounds of formulas III and IV may be cited, having a property by which a dispersion is brought about at low- frequency and the dielectric anisotropy value at high-frequency side is varied to -4 or less by the addition of compounds of the formula II (e.g., compounds of the formula V), although the dielectric anisotropy value does not become so small at high-frequency side.
