Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain yarns suitable for industrial materials, having stable spinnability in a fluid state, high degree of orientation at orifices, and improved breaking strength, by melt spinning a polyester having a low intrinsic viscosity under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate having an intrinsic viscosity (at 25°C, in o-chlorophenol) of 0.57W0.75, preferably 0.6W0.73, is melt spun under a shear stress of 4×106W7×10-6dynes/cm2, a shear rate of 3,500W 15,000sec-1, and a yarn temperature T(°C) at a distance L(cm) from the spinneret in the range expressed by the formula to give the desired yarns.
EFFECT: Large product of tensile strength and elongation permits drawn yarns having a high strength ≥10g/de even with a polyester of low intrinsic viscosity.
