Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce ferromagnetic metal powder for high density magnetic recording medium, by heating and dehydrating the goethite powder produced in alkaline reaction solution to produce α-Fe2O3, treating with silicone oil to prevent sintering, and heating and reducing.
CONSTITUTION: An alkaline agent such as KCl and Na2CO3 is added to ferrous salt solution such as ferrous sulfate to precipitate and deposit ferrous hydroxide or insoluble salt. Blowing gas containing oxygen, it is oxidized to obtain powder of goethite (α-FeOOH). It is then heated and dehydrated to obtain powder of α-Fe2O3, and is changed to magnetic iron oxide powder, such as Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3 after reducing or oxidizing process, if necessary. Then, the iron oxide powder is dipped in solution of ethanol or the like containing silicone oil, and is taken out and heated to remove the solvent. Then coated with silicone oil, sintering preventive treatment is given. Finally, by heating and reducing, ferromagnetic metal powder for high density magnetic recording medium may be obtained without sintering.
