Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a desulfurizing agent for hot iron used at the outside of a furnace, by mixing CaO with a specific ratios of carbonaceous material, cryolite, or Al powder in addn. CONSTITUTION:Quick lime, a main component, is mixed with 3-10% by wt. carbonaceous material, e.g., coke, charcoal, oil coke etc., 2-10% by wt. cryolite, or 3-8% by wt. Al powder in addn. The mixt. is added to pig iron contained in a ladle or a mixer car placed outside a blast furnace. The carbonaceous material serves to maintain reducing atmosphere required for desulfurization, and the cryolite increases the surfacing speed of desulfurization products in the bath. Al oxidizes faster than Si, preventing the consumption of the CaO by the reaction with SiO2 to form 2CaOSiO2. Use of inexpensive CaO in place of expensive CaC2 reduces the desulfurization cost.
