Abstract
PURPOSE: To completely enclose a rotor chamber and prevent contaminative substances from leaking to the outside, by providing the rotor of an electric motor on another rotor in the rotor chamber and providing the stator of the motor outside the chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A centrifugal separator 10 has a housing 11, which has a shape of a bottomed cylinder or the like. The interior of the housing 11 is divided into an upper rotor chamber 13 and a lower power chamber 14 by a partition wall 12. A rotor 15, which holds a sample such as microbes, is provided in the rotor chamber 13. The rotor 15 is rotatably supported by a bearing 16 secured in a recess provided on the center of the upper surface of the partition wall 12. An electric motor 17 for driving the rotor 15 has a permanent magnet 18 as a rotor. The permanent magnet 18 is provided on the bottom of the rotor 15. The stator winding 19 of the motor is provided in the power chamber 14 so that the stator winding is located at the side of the partition wall opposite the permanent magnet. As a result, no housing is needed for the motor. Therefore, the centrifugal separator is made compact.
