Abstract

PURPOSE: To preserve a crude drug in a stable state inexpensively without deteriorating the quality, by replacing the air in the container made of a material having the gas barrier properties, in which the drug is introduced, with CO2, and by sealing up the container.
CONSTITUTION: A crude drug is put into a container made of a material having the gas barrier properties, e.g. iron, aluminum, earthenware, a synthetic resin, polyethylene, or aluminum foil, and the air in the container is replaced via a vacuum pump with carbonic acid gas to seal up the container. According to the method, the drug is protected against various changes, e.g. of moisture and temperature, damage from insects, volatilization of volatile constituents, or change of constituents due to oxygen, without deterioration of quality. As for the drug, Japanease angelica root, Cinidium, Ginseng, Peony root, Cork tree bark, cinnamon bark, trifoliate orange fruits or Houttuynia cordata, may be cited. The drug becomes dormant on adsorption of the carbonic acid gas without bad influence.
