Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily measure the concentration of residual chlorine in an examined liquid, by adjusting the pH level of the liquid, adding an appropriate quantity of a solution of potassium iodide to the liquid to produce free iodine and detecting the free iodine.
CONSTITUTION: A diaphragm-type polarographic electrode 9 having a gas-permeable film 8 is immersed in an examined liquid 7. Free iodine having permeated the film 8 goes to a cathode 10. Electrolytic reaction takes place on the surface of the cathode 10. An electrical current proportional to the quantity of the free iodine, which participates in the reaction, flows through an external circuit. The current is proportional to the concentration of the free iodine in the examined liquid. As a result, the concentration of residual chlorine in the liquid can be determined.
