Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a (meth)acrylic ester polymer useful as a fiber-treating agent, etc. and free of abnormal polymers, e.g. corsslinked polymers, etc., by washing an aqueous solution of a quaternary nitrogen-containing (meth)acrylic ester with a chlorine-containing organic solvent, and polymerizing the solution in the presence of a radical polymerization catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An aqeous solution of a quaternary nitrogen-containing methacrylic ester and/or acrylic ester expressed by the formula (R0 is H or methyl; R is lower alkylene; R1WR3 are hydrocarbon; X- is anionic counter ion)(e.g. methacroyloxyethyl-dimethyl-ammoniummethylsulfate, etc.) is mixed with a chlorine-containing organic solvent incompatible with water (e.g. carbon tetrachloride, etc.) and washed by shaking the mixture violently. After separating the solvent, a peroxide- type radical-generating polymerization catalyst (e.g. potassium persulfate, etc.) is added to the system and polymerization is carried out to give the desired polymer.
