Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce working time and eliminate the need for any skilled persons by vertically moving an adjusting element to change the spacing of support bases, disposing the end faces of the optical fibers held on the top surfaces of the support bases in desired positions and fusion-bonding the same through heating. CONSTITUTION:Fiber support bases 4, 4' are symmetrical about the central axis 6 of an adjusting element 5. The surfaces 8, 8' of the adjusting element 5 are held pressed at all times by springs 7, 7'. The movement of the adjusting element 5 is made smooth by rotating elements 9, 9'. At the time of setting the optical fibers 1, 1' to be connected, the connection ends of the fibers 1, 1' are applied to the surfaces 11, 11' of the adjusting element 5. On the other hand, electrode bars 2, 2' are provided fixedly on the central axis line of the stopper 5 intersecting orthogonally with the fiber 1, 1' axial line, thence the adjusting element is lowered to close or contact the fibers 1, 1' which are then fusion-connected by the arc by the electrodes 2, 2'. The need for any position adjusting mechanism of the fiber 1, 1' ends and electrode bars 2, 2' is eliminated and the connection working time is considerably reduced.
