Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a physiologically active substance having hypotensive, central nervous system depressing, cholinergic stimulating, heat suppressing, and anti- inflammatory actions, by extracting and purifying inflorescences or buds of Japanese gingers (Zingiber Mioga Rosc.).
CONSTITUTION: Inflorescences or buds of Japanese gingers are extracted with neutral, slightly alkaline, or acidic water at about 50°C, and the extract is filtered and freeze-dried to give brown powder, which is extracted with purified water and then aqueous sodium hydroxide using a cation exchange resin column. The extract is eluted with an aqueous ammonia on a cation exchange resin column, and the fraction is freeze-dried to give a physiologically active substance. The substance is positive to the ninhydrin and Dragendorff reactions, and the hydrolyzate has IR absorptions of the amine and hydroxyl group.
