Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain ethylcarboxymethylcellulose with high substitution degree at high yield by a method wherein carboxymethylcellulose and diethyl sulfate are reacted in the presence of alkali while formed alcohol in removed out of a reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: Carboxymethylcellulose or salt thereof are reacted in the presence of alkali at 70W140°C while alcohol formed by side-reaction is removed out of a reaction system. As alkali, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or the like are used and a solvent is generally used in the reaction. As a solvent, toluene, xylene, benzene or the like are mentioned and the reaction can be carried out at an atmospheric pressure. The amount of diethyl sulphate is as small as 2W4 times the theoretical amount based on carboxymethylcellulose.
