Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the objective alkanol, easily and in high yield, by hydrogenating a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of water using a Ni catalyst, thereby selectively substituting the tert-OH group of the polyhydric alcohol with hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: The alkanols and/or alkanediols of formula II are prepared by the hydrogenation decomposition reaction of alkanediols and/or alkanetriols of formula I (R1, R2 are H, CH3 or methylol, provided that both of R1 and R2 are not methylol) in the presence of water, using a Ni catalyst (and pref. MgSO4), pref. at 150W 250°C.
