Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable even a large-size ingot to be uniformly refined all over by making a molten slag discharge hole in the side wall of the mold of an electroslag melting apparatus to stabilize the quality and amt. of molten slag at all times.
CONSTITUTION: Slag discharge hold 6 is made in the side wall of mold 1 of an electroslag melting apparatus, and to regulate the opening area sliding shutter 8 and plug 7 for clogging hole 6 are attached. Mold 1 is mounted on support 14 which is vertically moved by rotation of spiral rod 15, and dummy block 13 is put into the bottom of mold 1. Shavings and a slag making agent are charged into mold 1, consumable metal electrode 3 is lowered into mold 1, and an AC voltage is applied between electrode 3 and block 13 to melt-refine electrode 3 with molten slag as usual. As the refining proceeds, electrode 3 is lowered, and a fresh slag making agent is fed into mold 1 with feeder 16. The contaminated used molten slag is discharged from hole 6 to maintain the amt. of molten slag in mold 1 and the concn. of effective component Ca constant at all times. Thus, even a large-size ingot is refined stably and uniformly.
