Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the durability of backing metals and enable welding work to be done stably by combining and incorporating stationary backing metals and slide backing metals to respectively movable segments.
CONSTITUTION: Each arc-form segment which is held extensibly in the pipe radial direction from the pipe axial center is formed by a stationary segment 11 and a slide segment 12 which slidably holds a backing metal 13. The both segments 11, 12 are made movable by separate cylinders. If the both segments 11, 12 are moved toward the pipe inside surface, the stationary segment 11 remains mounted and the slide metal 13 of the slide segment 12 slides axially with bars 18, 24 as a guide, thereby evening the gap between the inside surface of the pipe and the backing metal. Hence, by this backing strip device, the pipe inside circumference is evenly welded.
