Abstract

PURPOSE: To immobilize microbial cells, easily, without reducing the activity, by mixing an aqueous solution of a solubilized collagen with a suspension of microbial cells incapable of decomposing collagen, coagulating the mixture by extruding into a solvent, and curing the extrudate.
CONSTITUTION: A suspension of microbial cells incapable of decomposing collagen, is mixed with an aqueous solution containing about 4% of an enzyme-solubilized collagen or an alkali-solubilized collagen, and the mixture is extruded into an organic solvent such as ethanol, or an aqueous solution of salt, e.g. saturated ammonium sulfate solution. The coagulated extrudate is crosslinked with a crosslinking agent having an aldehyde group, e.g. starch dialdehyde, or by UV- or γ-ray irradiation. The microbial cells are immobilized in a capillary or in a fibrous form without lowering the activity.
