Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in high selectivity, useful as a raw material for oxalic acid, analytical reagents, solvents for perfumes, intermediates for organic compounds, etc., by the reaction of aliphatic alcohols, carbon monoxide, and O2, under pressure, in the presence of palladium nitrate and a quinone as catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: An aliphatic alcohol, preferably a 1W6C straight chain aliphatic alcohol, carbon monoxide and molecular oxygen are reacted under pressure, in the presence of palladium nitrate in an amount of 0.5W10mmol based on 100ml of a raw material alcohol, and a quinone in a molar amount of 0.5W40 times that of the palladium nitrate, e.g. benzoquinone, naphthoquinone, or anthraquinone, as catalysts, to obtain an oxalate.
