Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform welding free from any defects even with the particularly thick works by maintaining the lengthwise direction of the electron beam of rectangular or oblong shape in section in the horizontal direction and relatively moving the works in such a manner that their joint direction intersects with the horizontal direction.
CONSTITUTION: Works 1 are so placed on the horizontal top surface 4 of a moving table 3 by way of bases 5, 6 that the direction of its joint 2 has an angle with the horizontal direction in any place. An electron beam is then radiated onto the joint 2 of the works 1 by the electrode lens not illusrated formed by a bar cathode 7 having rectangular or other shape electron release surface and a Wehnelt 8 having a rectangular or other shape electron pass hole and anode 9 in such a manner that its lengthwise direction becomes horizontal. In this case the vertical direction positions of the beam spot 10 are so adjusted as to align to the position of the joint 2. According to this method, the spot 10 is relatively small in the perpendicular direction and therefore the flow down of the molten metal is prevented and since the joint 2 and spot 10 are interesecting, dislocation between both plates is difficult to occur.
