Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-quality title (co)polymer useful as an adehsive or the like by contacting dicyclopentadiene alone or a monomer mixture of said dicyclopentadiene and cycloolefines with a catalyst system comprising a combination of a W or Mo compound and an organic Bi compound.
CONSTITUTION: A halogenated or a oxy-halogenated compound of tungsten or molybdenum, e.g., tungsten dibromide, molybdenum tribromide or the like and an organic bismuth compound shown by a formula RmBiX3-m (wherein R is alkyl, aryl; X is halogen; m is 1W3), e.g., triarylbismutn or the like are combined to prepare a catalyst system. Thereafter, in the presence of this catalyst system, dicyclopentadiene or a monomer mixture comprising dicyclopentadiene and cycloolefines is subjected to polymerization reaction to obtain a title (co)polymer.
