Abstract
PURPOSE: To accelerate curing rate, enhance impact strength, and prevent whitening in use of α-cyanoacrylate based adhesive by treating adherends with melamine and methylolurea that may be partially alkoxylated.
CONSTITUTION: Uniform liquid adhesive consists of α-cyanoacrylate of the formula (wherein R is 1W16C alkyl, allyl, phenyl), stabilizer, and polymerization inhibitor. Prior to the application of the adhesive, the surfaces of adherends is treated with cpd. selected from melamine and methylolurea that may be partially alkoxylated, or its derivative. This process accelerates the rate of curing, enhances impact strength, and prevents whitening phemomenon. For example, monomethylolurea or dimethylolmelamine is coated on one or both of properly pretreated adherends, then cyano-base adhesive is coated on the other or both of the adherends, and the adherends are firmly contacted with each other. Then, polymerization reaction occurs within several seconds and the adhesion completes.
