Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a modified polyester useful for microfilm, having improved slipperiness and low cloudiness, by reacting terephthalic acid with an ethylene glycol slurry comprising uniformly dispersed fine inert inorganic particles.
CONSTITUTION: (A) Inert inorganic particles are dispersed in ethylene glycol by mechanical stirring to form a slurry which gives a residue ≤50,000ppm after passing through a microfilter of pore size 50μ, and subjected to ultrasonic waves to afford a uniform slurry. The slurry is then reacted with (B) terephthalic acid or its ester- forming derivative, and polycondensed. ZnO, TiO2, or BaSO4 may be cited as the inorganic compound. Ultrasonic waves preferably have a frequency of 20W1,000 KHz.
