Abstract

PURPOSE: In the polycondensation of bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate, the vacuum in the reactors is controlled in response to the change of the measured values of electric power for stirring at the final reactor which is one of reactors arranged in series, thus producing continuously uniform polyesters with reduced fluctuatin in quality.
CONSTITUTION: Bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate and/or its oligomers are continuously fed by pump 4 into the first reactor 1. The reaction mixture flows down from the first reactor 1 through the second reactor 2 and the third reactor 3 to intermediate tank 6 by its gravity. The degree of vacuum in the reactors 1, 2, and 3 is adjusted to the prescribed value by vacuum generators 14, 17, and 22 along with vacuum recording regulators 16, 19, and 24; however, at least in the final reactors among reactors from which the polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of over 0.2 at the outlets, the degree of vacuum is controlled so that the values measured by stirring controller or stirring power recording controllers 20, 25 are kept to the prescribed levels.
