Abstract
PURPOSE: To make a reduction of pumping loss in the range of low and medium load, by constructing a cam for intake valve into two-stage cam of different profile, and making a valve open period of the intake valve variable into two stages.
CONSTITUTION: On the top portion of a cylinder head 1, between bearings 2 and 2', is rotatably and axially slidably supported a cam shaft 3, and in a position, corresponding to each intake valve 4, is uniformly constructed a two-stage cam, with a profile 5a, 5b made switching in accordance with a displacement of the cam shaft 3. The profile 5a is provided with a valve lift characteristic of type, in which a preference is viewed in the point of torque for a conventional throttle valve when fully open, and the profile 5b, through being set the same manner in its valve open timing as those conventional, is set in such manner for its valve close timing that the valve be closed in earlier times before bottom dead center or later times after bottom dead center. These profiles 5a, 5b can be smoothly made a changeover operation by a tapered part 5c.
