Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title dye in high purity and yield, in one reactor, by heating a specific aniline derivative in the presence of a tert-amine-halogen complex.
CONSTITUTION: An aniline derivative of formula [R1 is H, lower alkyl, allyl, (substituted) phenyl, benzoyl, etc.; R2 is H, lower alkyl, benzyloxy, (substituted) phenyl, etc.; X is Cl, Br, or I] is heated at pref. ≥40°C in the presence of a tert- amine-halogen complex, for 0.5W5hr. under reflux, to afford the objective triphenylmethane dye of formula II. The tert-amine of the complex is pref. trialkylamine, etc., and the halogen is pref. Cl, etc.
