Useful as a perfume or flavor and an intermediate for preparing an epoxyionol derivative which is a unique flavor component of the leaf tabacco from Suifu. (Suifu is a growing district of tabacco in Japan)
PROCESS: A compound of formula II (X is arylsulfonyl or alkylsulfonyl) is treated with a base, e.g. sodium hydride or potasium hydride, to form an ether ring and give the compound of formula I.
