Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily produce a high-purity polymer having excellent heat resistance, by hydrolyzing the reaction product of (substituted) pyromellitic anhydride, an arylacetate ester, etc., then decarboxylating the hydrolyzate and reacting the decarboxylated product with a diamino compound.
CONSTITUTION: The ester linkages or nitrile linkages contained in the product prepared by reacting a (substituted) pyromellitic anhydride of formula I, wherein R1 and R2 are each H, hydrocarbon or halogen, with an arylacetate ester or an arylacetonitrile at 100W300°C, in the presence of a catalyst such as sodium acetate, are hydrolyzed and the hydrolzate is decarboxylated to form a compound of formula II, wherein Ar1 and Ar2 are aryl. The compound is condensed, with heating, with a diamino compound such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether in the presence or adsence of a polymerization catalyst such as boric acid to obtain a polymer of formula III or IV. The compounds of formula II are easy to purify and are obtained as high-purity products. Accordingly, the amount of a polymerization catalyst to be used may be reduced.
