Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a resin having excellent water resistance, by a method wherein an inorg. acid is added to an aq. soln. of an aq. resin having hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups in the molecule, and then water is removed.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl ester (e.g. vinyl formate) is reacted with 0.3W30mol% unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer (e.g. acrylic acid or maleic acid) in a lower alcohol solvent and in the presence of a polymn. catalyst. The resulting product is saponified to produce an aq. resin having hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups in the molecule. The pH of the aq. soln. of said aq. resin is adjusted to 5 or below by the addition of an inorg. acid (e.g. HCl or H2SO4). Then water is removed.
EFFECT: The aq. resin soln. to which the inorg. acid is added is stable without causing gelation and precipitating the resin even after the soln. is left to stand for a long period of time.
USE: Adhesives, binders, paint vehicles, etc.
