Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of a shortcircuit between the terminals of a power converter by discriminating whether the GTO is OFF or not at the time when an OFF signal is applied to the gate signal of the GTO. CONSTITUTION:A control circuit 51 applies a gate signal through a gate amplifier 61 to GTOs 1-4 to thereby turn ON or OFF the GTOs 1-4 in a desired period and to supply power to the load. The output signals of voltage detectors 21-24 and the output signal of a current detector 31 are applied to a turn-off failure detector 41 to thereby detect whether the GTOs 1-4 fails or not to turn off. When the GTOs fail to turn off by the detection, all the GTOs 1-4 are turned off.
