Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover high-density emlusion polymer as a dehydroated cake having low water content, suppressing the generation of fine powders, by adding a coagulant, a rubbery polymer latex, etc., and a coagulant in the order to a rigid polymer latex, and heat-treating the mixture at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: In the recovery of a polymer from a reaction system after the emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium, a coagulant (e.g. magnesium sulfate) is added to a rigid polymer latex (e.g. α-methylstyrene-acrylonitrile copolymer) to obtain a dispersion of primary coagulum, which is then mixed with a rubbery polymer latex (e.g. butadiene-styrene copolyer) and/or a graft polymer latex, and finally a coagulant (e.g. aluminum sulfate) is added to the product to precipitate the rubbery polymer, etc. to the surface of the primary coagulum particles. The product is heat-treated above a temperature lower than the glass transition temperature of the rigid polymer by 10°C, followed by separation and drying.
